A truly dynamic performer, Lena Horne has successfully blended grace, talent and determination to become one of America's most popular entertainers. Born into a privileged household in 1917,Horne divided her youth between a self-contained, black middle-class neighborhood in Brooklyn and several towns in the racially segregated South. Her professional stage debut took place amid surroundings that were even more exclusive. At the age of 16,she became a chorus girl at an exotic cabaret that featured only black performers:the celebrated Cotton Club in Harlem. Always presented as a model of respectability and glamour, the light-skinned Horne managed to cross over the color barrier and with the acceptance of white society. Yet her personal triumphs did not blind her to the plight of her fellow blacks. Throughout her career, Lena Horne has tackled civil rights issues in the same way that she has approached her art: with passion and pride. Discography: p. 122. Bibliography: p. 124. 20221025.
